Arab Bank, Headquarters and Mohandesseen Branch, Cairo
H2L2/Wassef Architects, Planners, Engineers & Project Managers was selected to plan and design the Egyptian headquarters for the Arab Bank. The client had two specific requests: design spaces which would support banking needs of the 21st century and design a building that was progressive, yet uniquely Egyptian in appearance. Located on a broad, tree lined boulevard in an affluent Cairo neighborhood, the building risks being overshadowed by existing and proposed buildings. A bold, large scaled façade incorporating a louvered screen reminiscent of an ancient mushrabiya was designed. This device serves both as a signature element for the building as well as an ornamental shading device for the large glass areas and roof top lounge. Clad horizontal bands of Egyptian granite, the building alludes to the historic fabric of the city, but with a decidedly more contemporary treatment.
