Sofitel Hotel and Tourist Resort – Sharm El Sheikh
Wassef Design Group provided structural design services for the Abu-Dhabi Tourist and Investment Company. The design was in full coordination with the Architectural design of Architect Nabil Ghali. The site is Located on a 100 Feddans site (420,000 square meters).
This 50,000 square meters tourist resort consists of 300 hotel rooms spread into 5 clusters built to suit the sloped site character, public and restaurant facilities building, diving center, reception building, utilities building, water tank, health club building, equestrian club, an open auditorium and four VIP villas for dignitaries and special guests.
Wassef Design Group chose concrete construction with concrete vaults as a framing plan for the hotel rooms to satisfy natural air quality and temperature criterias. The use of timber joists for large span restaurants in the public building provided increased span lengths for column-free spaces, while respecting the architectural design inspired by Nubian architecture and Arab motifs.
By using vaults and domes, the tourist resorts uses 40% less energy than a comparable one of flat slab construction, for a significant projected savings in running costs per year.
